Required Education

A bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or a comparable field is required in order to become a biofuel process engineer. Some employers may require applicants to have a graduate degree. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is also required for some careers in this field.

Required Skills

Biofuel process engineers are involved with determining ways to improve how biofuels are made so they need to have good problem-solving skills, and they also need analytical skills so that they can assess information and processes to determine their effectiveness. Since one of their objectives is to make the biofuel production process more cost-effective it is important that they have mathematical skills so that they can determine the potential savings from specific changes to the production process. They must have computer skills and be capable of using ChemCad software, MS Office programs and other relevant computer programs. Leadership skills are also important since they may oversee other engineers or engineering technicians who are involved with biofuel production.

Career Outlook and Salary

Biofuel process engineers are included with general engineering professions on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS reports that 'engineers, all other' should see a 4% job growth rate from 2018 to 2028. The BLS lists an annual median salary of $99,040 for those engineers in 2019.
