Schools in New York Offering Master's Programs in Bioinformatics

Rochester Institute of Technology

Students can learn topics related to biotechnology, computational mathematics, and software programming with a Master of Science in Bioinformatics degree at Rochester Institute of Technology. This program focuses on teaching computer programming in DNA sequence analysis and the prediction of molecular models. Students can learn bioinformatics, database management, biostatistics, and molecular modeling during the first-year study. This two-year degree requires 30 credits and includes research and a thesis during the second year. Students can pursue this program on a full-time or a part-time basis.

New York University

The Tandon School of Engineering at New York University offers an online master of science program in bioinformatics. This 30-credit program offers preliminary courses related to chemistry, biology, computer programming, algorithms, and data structures in the context of the bioinformatics domain for learners with different backgrounds. The curriculum covers mathematics and statistic concepts, machine learning and data science, biotechnology concepts for bioinformatics. Students will need to choose a six credit concentration in either Laboratory Science or Translational Science.

Columbia University

An M.A. in Biomedical Informatics degree is available in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University with full-time and part-time options. Students can finish this program in two to four years and are required to complete 60 points of course work to graduate from the program. Typical coursework will cover topics such as programming and statistics concepts, computer applications useful in healthcare, analyzing biological sequences, and research methods. In addition, there are elective courses related to translational bioinformatics, quantitative and computational analysis, deep sequences, and public health informatics.

University at Buffalo

The University at Buffalo offers a Master of Science in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics program. This program includes an internship project to give students practical working experience and provide an opportunity to work with different schools and departments at the university. Students can learn about data mining and statistical modeling, and will be able to choose from a range of elective courses. A thesis option is also available to students who wish to do so.

Cornell University

Weill Cornell Medicine school at Cornell University offers an interdisciplinary master's program in computational biology. This program focuses on providing computational techniques and mathematical skills required to process, interpret, and analyze biological data. In addition to biology, statistics, and machine learning course work, the curriculum includes hands-on practice programs in computer labs. This full-time program should take around 18 months to complete.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a bachelor's degree, with some schools preferring students to have completed a four-year bachelor's degree in a relevant subject such as; biology, chemistry, engineering, biochemistry, computer science, or medicine. Some schools may require students to complete prerequisite course work before being accepted to the program. Students will generally need to submit GRE scores in some schools, in addition to official transcripts of undergraduate studies and two to three letters of recommendation, a resume, and a statement of purpose. Some schools prefer a minimum GPA of 3.0 during undergraduate studies.
