Biomedical Engineering Master's Degree Programs in Colorado
Colorado State University
Colorado State University offers a Master of Engineering with a specialization in biomedical engineering. This program requires students to complete 30 hours of coursework, but it does not require a master's thesis or project. In general, the M.E program is intended for professionals who are hoping to advance further in their field by obtaining a master's degree which could qualify them for management level positions.
The university also offers a a Master of Science in Bioengineering that combines training both in engineering and in the human medicine sciences. This program emphasizes three main areas of study, one of which is biomechanics and biomaterials. Other areas delve into molecular engineering and medical diagnostics. The M.S. degree is intended for more research-oriented students who hope to pursue research as a career or continue their studies at the Ph.D. level.
University of Colorado Denver
The Master of Science in Bioengineering at the University of Colorado Denver is another program that students seeking biomedical engineering training may be interested in. This program allows students to select an emphasis area, so students interested in biomedical engineering could pursue the biomedical device design emphasis. This program requires students to complete 30 hours of coursework, 21 of which are core courses while 9 of which are electives. Students take both practical and research oriented courses to prepare them for a either a thesis or a final project.
University of Colorado Boulder
At the University of Colorado Boulder, students can apply for the Master of Science Thesis program in Mechanical Engineering and then select the biomedical focus area. This degree program requires that students complete 30 credit hours, including six hours in the form of a master's thesis, 15 credits in specialized courses, and 9 credits outside the department. All students in the program must take a course that focuses on methods in engineering analysis before being able to have more flexibility in their course selection. Students are also responsible for securing a thesis advisor who will also help them in the process of selecting relevant courses.
Admission Standards for Master's Degree Programs in Biomedical Engineering
When applying to a master's degree program in biomedical engineering, there are a few things that prospective students will likely want to consider. Generally, these programs require that students have a background in engineering, which can be demonstrated by having achieved a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering or a very closely related field. Programs may also consider applicants who have studied other fields of engineering, along with mathematics and the sciences, though they may require these applicants to complete some prerequisites before beginning the graduate coursework. When a student is ready to submit an application, they will need to complete an application form, send in letters of recommendation, transcripts, a personal statement, a resume, and results from the GRE examination.
There are a few opportunities for students in the state of Colorado who are seeking master's degrees in biomedical engineering. These programs prepare students for careers in the field of biomedical engineering through coursework and the option of a research thesis.
