Broadcast Journalism Graduate Schools in New York City

New York University

New York University offers a wide number of Master of Arts degrees in journalistic fields, some of which would provide students with instruction in broadcast journalism. The News & Documentary program prepares students to report on short and long-form stories, both for the purposes of traditional media, like television news stations, as well as more non-traditional media, like independent documentaries. In this program, students will take courses like elemental storytelling, TV reporting, TV newscast, and long form video editing. This program takes three semesters to complete and students are encouraged to seek out an internship in the field during the summer between the first and second year of the program.

Columbia University

Students at Columbia University can enroll in the Master of Science in Journalism degree, which is designed for students who have several years or less of professional experience. Within this program, students are required to take a number of core classes, but also have the opportunity to take classes that are focused on a specific medium, like broadcast journalism. Students also have the opportunity to specialize in either investigative or documentary reporting. The school also offers as Master of Arts degree in Journalism, which is designed for professionals with between three and fifteen years of experience. Students who enroll in this program can select from four concentrations - arts & culture, business & economics, politics, or science. This program allows students a greater degree of flexibility, allowing them to enroll in any graduate broadcast journalism course. Columbia also offers a multidisciplinary PhD program in communications, in which a broad range of topics may be explored.

The City University of New York

The City University of New York also offers a three semester Master of Arts in Journalism degree. At the end of the first semester of study, students select from one of six concentration options - arts and culture reporting, business and economics reporting, health and science reporting, international reporting, Spanish-language journalism program, or urban reporting. In addition, students can select a specialty area. Within the visual journalism specialty, students will learn all the fundamental skills of creating compelling visual media content, like editing and writing. Then, students can further specialize towards the middle and end of the program in broadcast journalism specifically.

Fordham University

Fordham University is a Jesuit Roman Catholic school located nearby in the Bronx. Fordham offers a Master of Arts degree in Public Media in which students can select the Multi-Platform Journalism track if they are interested in working in broadcast journalism. This program is designed to be completed in one year on a full-time basis. Students in the program will take a number of required courses and then can select from elective courses according to their interests. Some courses that may be of particular interest to students interested in broadcast journalism include digital storytelling, advanced interviews and profiles, audio narrative, and video narrative. Students also can choose to fulfill three unit hours of required elective credit by completing an internship in the field to gain professional experience.

Admission Standards for Broadcast Journalism Graduate Programs in New York City

Graduate degree programs in journalism typically do not expect applicants to have completed a specific undergraduate degree program, though some may have minimum GPA requirements. Depending on the type of program, students may be expected to demonstrate professional working experience.
