Graduate Program Options in Business

Master of Business Administration

A Master of Business Administration, or MBA, is a common graduate degree in business to consider. In MBA programs, students are prepared for managerial positions at many different types of organizations. While no particular undergraduate degree is required to enter MBA programs, students should hold knowledge of economics and of the basic legal and ethical concerns facing businesses. MBA programs typically take 2 years of study to complete; however, part-time and executive options could affect a program's length of completion. Some courses completed during an MBA program typically include financial reporting, marketing analysis, and strategic decision-making.

Master of Science

Those who wish to develop a specialized understanding of a particular discipline in the business world might consider earning a Master of Science (M.S.) degree. M.S. degrees are offered in a range of business areas, including business analytics and human resources management. Coursework will be specifically tailored to the specialization of the degree.

Doctorate of Philosophy in Business

Students who wish to hone their theoretical skills in order to pursue a career as a professor or researcher may consider a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in business. PhD in business programs can take approximately five to six years to complete. Students will take core coursework and specialize in an area of business. They will also be required to complete comprehensive examinations and a dissertation. Teaching is typically an expected component of the PhD program.

Graduate Business Programs in New York City

New York University

Students can pursue the MBA, M.S. or PhD at NYU's Stern School of Business. The general MBA is a full-time, two-year program. Students take courses in areas such as foundations of finance and operations management. Experiential courses, such as strategy with a social purpose and the NYU impact investing fund, give students hands-on business experience. In addition to the full-time general MBA, students can elect to pursue a tech MBA, fashion and luxury MBA, or executive MBA.

In addition to the MBA, students can select from a range of M.S. degrees, including quantitative finance and risk management. Some of these programs are jointly offered with NYU-Shanghai, while others are online programs.

Students who wish to undertake a tailored, research-intensive program can also elect to pursue a PhD at NYU. PhD programs can focus on information systems, marketing, or a range of other business disciplines.

Hofstra University

Hofstra offers several different opportunities to earn an MBA at its campuses on Long Island and in Manhattan. To obtain the MBA, students take 38-45 credits designed to develop core competencies, functional knowledge, and networking skills. Students can specialize in a range of areas, including sports management and taxation. Students can also opt for a Co-Op MBA program, which provides extensive experiential learning opportunities in a cohort-based model; an online MBA program; or an executive MBA. Students can also pursue joint Juris Doctor/MBA or Master of Arts in Sustainability/MBA programs.

Hofstra also offers Master of Science programs in a range of business disciplines, including finance and accounting. These programs require students to take 30-33 graduate credits.

Fordham University

At Fordham University, students can pursue a range of graduate business degrees through the Gabelli School of Business. There are several options for pursuing the MBA at Fordham, including a full-time MBA, professional MBA, executive MBA, and executive MBA for athletes or artists. Length of program completion will be 2-4 years. In the full-time program, concentrations include public accountancy, finance, and global sustainability. An applied project will place students with a real business to create a business plan and prototype.

Students can pursue the M.S. in a range of specialized business fields, including information technology and media management. Program completion can range from 30-45 credits, depending on the field of study. The curriculum will vary significantly based upon the niche area pursued, but it may include topics such as enterprise IT management or crisis communication.

Students who wish to pursue a highly analytical program of study can consider a PhD at Fordham. The PhD program begins with core courses such as econometrics, data analysis, and research methods. Students then focus on capital markets or strategy and decision-making. They also take intensive research seminars, including empirical capital markets and consumer behavior. Students have frequent contact with well-respected research scholars as well as business practitioners from the New York financial industry.

University of Rochester

The University of Rochester offers an M.S. in Finance degree at its campus in New York City. This program requires 13 months of part-time study during weekend classes to complete, and it's targeted for working professionals. The program focuses on providing students analytic tools to succeed in the business world, including banking and corporate finance. Courses include financial statement analysis and investment. Residency weeks in Rochester and Switzerland are a component of the program.

College of Mount Saint Vincent

Students can pursue their MBA at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx. The program requires 60 credits to complete. Students begin their studies with core courses, including financial management and business law. They then focus upon areas of specialization in health care management, international business, nonprofit management, or a comprehensive track. Capstone courses focus upon ethics and business strategy.
