Overview of Online Business Intelligence Certificate Programs

There is at least one online certificate program available specifically in business intelligence, but most of these online certificates include an additional topic, such as business intelligence and database development, analytics, or database management. Typically, these certificate programs are offered at the graduate level and are designed for a wide range of information technology (IT) and business professionals looking to further develop skills in data and business process analysis. Students in these programs learn how to examine data, pull useful information from the data, and provide management with information to make the best-informed decisions.

Usually, graduate certificate programs in business intelligence are available completely online. These certificates may take 2-3 semesters to complete, or about 8-12 months. Applicants to these programs typically need to have a bachelor's degree, but this degree can usually be in any field. Although students are not usually required to have a background in computer science, some programs are geared towards professionals with specific skill sets, such as those with some database or SQL (structured query language) experience, and could require applicants without any programing training to complete prerequisites.

Requirements for Online Business Intelligence Certificates

Students in online business intelligence certificate programs gain experience with technologies in the field as they learn about data mining and how business intelligence is used to influence decisions. While coursework is completed online, students still have hands-on opportunities to use various business intelligence tools, data mining methodologies, and other software programs themselves.

Information and Requirements

Online certificate programs in business intelligence usually require between nine and 16 credits. This requires students to take 3-4 core courses in the field, with some programs allowing students to choose between one or more courses in the sequence. Some programs allow students to count credits from the certificate program towards a master's degree in an area like computer information systems.

Common Courses

Business Intelligence

Students in business intelligence courses explore the different stores of data available to help solve business-related problems and improve decision making. These courses also allow students to explore the various techniques and technologies used with big data. Students may discuss transforming data, viewing data, extracting data, data profiling, and more.

Data Mining

Courses in data mining focus on preparing and analyzing data using a range of algorithms and statistical techniques. Students in these courses study the main concepts, tools, and methods in the field, such as visualization, classification, clustering, and prediction. These courses may also expose students to both structured and unstructured data.

Database Systems

Some certificate programs provide a course that gives students an overview of various database systems, while other certificate programs provide courses that focus on specific aspects of databases, such as database management or database design. In general, these courses help teach students how to design and manage databases that may pull information from different systems, like data warehouses or point-of-sale systems. Students may also learn about data modeling, distributed database systems, and data analysis.

Career Outcomes with a Certificate in Business Intelligence

While a certificate in business intelligence is not usually required for information systems (IS) or IT professionals, experience in the field may be a sought after skill for some employers. Many different positions in IS and IT can benefit from and apply experience in business intelligence, including computer systems analysts, computer and information systems managers, and database administrators. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), all three of these positions require at least a bachelor's degree.

As of 2019, the BLS reported that computer systems analysts made a median salary of $90,920 and had a job outlook of 9% from 2018 to 2028. These analysts examine computer systems to find ways they can help organizations run more smoothly. Computer and information systems managers made a median salary of $146,360 as of 2019 and had a job outlook of 11% from 2018 to 2028. These managers oversee the computer technology projects and operations in their organization. Finally, as of 2019 the BLS reported that database administrators made a median salary of $93,750 and had a job outlook of 9% during the same decade. These administrators help store, secure, and organize data in various databases.

Fully online certificate programs are available in business intelligence to help further advance IS and IT professionals' careers. These programs are offered at the graduate level and can be completed in one year or less.
