Answer:

In addition to a bachelor's degree, a master's degree is necessary to become a therapist. This pertains to family and marriage therapists, especially. The master's degree must be in an area of mental health. Upon degree completion, there are several more requirements to be a therapist, although no experience in the field is necessary. An internship or residency is done instead. To become a licensed therapist in one's state, the candidate must pass an exam and receive between 2,000 and 4,000 hours of supervised training. A therapist's licensing and certification process continues when they are practicing as well, as they must attend yearly classes on mental health topics.

A similar, yet more specific, career that does not necessarily require a master's degree is behavioral disorder and substance abuse counseling. Whereas a marriage or family therapist may focus on relationships, a substance abuse counselor pays more attention to the individual. A high school diploma is the minimum requirement for such a position, but one may desire to increase his/her competitiveness in the work field through the pursuit of a higher degree. Like a therapist, a counselor must also be trained, licensed, and certified.
