The following are some Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) programs that are related to the field of fashion and design:

  • The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers a Ph.D. in Human Sciences where students choose from one of the following areas of specialization: (1) Apparel Design, (2) Material Culture and Textile Studies, (3) Merchandising, and (4) Textile Science. The program requires completion of at least 90 hours of courses including research methods, seminars, and dissertation.
  • The College of Design at the University of Minnesota offers a Doctor of Philosophy program where students choose between an Apparel Studies Track and a Graphic Design Track. Students in the Apparel Studies Track choose from between the following concentrations: (1) Dress, History, and Culture; (2) Product Development, and (3) Retail and Consumer Studies.
  • The College of Human Ecology at Cornell University offers graduate programs in the fields/topics of Apparel Design and Fiber Science. Both programs are available at the doctoral level and lead to a degree of Doctor of Philosophy. In order to earn the degree, students will be required at least three years of graduate study beyond a master's.
