Does Brigham Young University (BYU) use the Common Application essays?

Perfect School Search

No, Brigham Young University (BYU) does not use the Common Application. Instead, they have their own application process direct to the university.

The BYU application deadline varies depending on when you intend to start. The schedule can be found on the university's homepage. COVID has lead to a limited number of ACT and SAT exam options, so most applicants will not be required to submit a test score to apply to BYU for spring, summer, fall 2021 and winter 2022. Applicants can still submit a test score if they feel it would benefit their application. BYU does not consider any applicants who will be younger than 17 by the first day of class.

When you apply, you will be required to submit the following information:

  • A transcript or official record for all US-accredited academic work, including any completed outside the United States and including accredited homeschool programs.
  • Several letters of recommendation from teachers and leaders in your life
  • Essays responding to the required prompts, which are available on the university website
