Western Michigan University offers several Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) programs under various fields. In general, official test scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are required as part of the admission requirements for WMU's Ph.D. programs. However, there are certain programs that have more specific GRE requirements.

The following is a list of some of the WMU areas/subjects offering Ph.D. programs that require the GRE, as well as the more specific GRE requirement for some select programs: Applied Economics, Biological Sciences (score must be above the 50th percentile), Chemistry (score must be at least 30th percentile in each category), Computer Science, Counselor Education, English (with Creative Writing emphasis), Education and Human Development (scores above the 50th percentile preferred for the following: Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytic Writing sections), Educational Leadership (scores within the 50th percentile or better), Engineering and Applied Sciences, Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, Interdisciplinary Studies, Physics, Political Science, Spanish, and Statistics.

Interested applicants, however, should note that (1) some Ph.D. programs are not accepting applicants for specific school/academic years (for various reasons), and (2) some programs have temporarily suspended GRE admission requirements due challenges brought about by COVID-19.
