The best path to excel in a career in Human Resources (HR) is to gain as much valuable knowledge and experience as possible. In obtaining a bachelor's degree, coursework will include topics on employee selection and staffing, employee and labor relations, compensation and benefits, and laws pertaining to human resources, and it will open the door to entry-level positions and next-level positions. Gaining experience outside a current job scope can be done at work; for example, offering to help with special projects, such as performing salary surveys, assisting with benefits administration, and employee relations. Promotions within or outside of a company should continue to be sought.

Human Resources professionals should always continue to look for chances to learn. A serious Human Resources professional should stay current concerning issues related to business and labor by reading professional organization articles and be apprised of changes from the government concerning laws and regulations. Many HR professionals study and take exams to be certified Human Resources professionals through the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). By obtaining SHRM Certification (SHRM-SP or SHRM-SCP), evidence of proven competencies is highly desirable to employers.

A master's degree in Human Resources will also assist in proficiency in Human Resources and make available management and consultant career paths.
