To get a food manager certification in the U.S., you'll need to pass a Department of State Health Services (DSHS) examination. This certification will be valid for five years and the examination can be taken at any licensed training program, test site, or online exam. You will be charged a fee for your certificate after completing the needed requirements.

Certified Food Manager Training Programs offer training to people who need qualified training and are new to the food industry. This training takes around 14 hours to complete and after the completion of the training, a DSHS approved examination will be given to the students. Once the examination is successfully completed, a food manager certification will be issued.

Testing sites and online examination work in a similar manner. The only difference is that testing sites do not offer training and only some online providers do. Both testing sites and online resources provide an examination and after successful completion, they issue a food manager certification.
