To get an AALAS certification, one must apply through the Advancement of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). There are several certifications that the Advancement of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) offers. The first is the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT). The requirements for ALAT are two years of lab experience if you do not have a high school diploma, a high school diploma and one year of lab experience, or any college degree with six months of lab experience. There is also a fee of $160 for members or $235 for nonmembers and the passing of an exam according to the AALAS website. The second certification available is the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT). The requirements for the LAT include a high school diploma with three years of lab experience, any associate's degree with two years of lab experience, any bachelor's degree with one year of lab experience, or ALAT certification with a high school diploma and six months of lab experience. There is also a $210 fee for members or $285 for nonmembers along with a passing of the exam. The third certification is Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG). The requirements are a high school diploma with five years of lab experience, any associate's degree with four years of lab experience, any bachelor's experience with three years of lab experience, or LAT certification with a high school diploma and six months of lab experience. The fee is $260 for members or $335 for nonmembers and there is an exam to pass.
