Specific standards and requirements to become certified to teach in any position in a public school will vary from state to state. Virtually all states require all of their teachers to possess at least a bachelor's degree, and also require completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program. Usually, colleges and universities will incorporate said preparation programs into the coursework/curriculum of education degree programs; however, for those who completed undergraduate studies outside of the state they would like to teach in, it will usually be required to take the preparation program component again when transferring certification. There are also usually certification exam requirements, as well. The specific exams necessary to pass will depend on the state, and sometimes as well as on the grade level/subject area in which certification is being sought. To become an art teacher, it is may be required to have a bachelor's degree in art education, or in art itself in tandem with another level of education coursework, either as a dual major or a minor.
