Aspiring individuals may take 4 to 5 years to become a travel agent. The general education requirements for this profession is usually a high school diploma, although there are companies that might prefer those individuals who have college degrees or related subjects to the travel industry. Many schools and industry associations offer training and programs in professional travel planning, which include topics in the reservation system, marketing, and travel regulations. Individuals may also obtain college degrees in travel and tourism. Newly graduate travel agents are trained to work on the computer systems that are used in the industry such as reservation systems. Individuals who have a high school diploma and limited experience are recommended to take the Travel Agent Proficiency (TAP) test given by the Travel Institute to show their competence and competitive advantage. There are also certification opportunities for experienced travel agents, such as Certified Travel Associate (CTA), for travel agents who have limited experience and the Certified Travel Counselor (CTC) for travel agents who have 5 years of work experience in the industry. Both CTC and CTA require continuing education to maintain their certification.
