There are a few different areas you can work in when you look into becoming a fashion designer. Some of the largest employers of fashion designers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) are:

  • Apparel, piece goods, and notions merchant wholesalers at 29%
  • Self-employed workers at 22%
  • Management of companies and enterprises at 13%
  • Motion picture and video industries at 11%
  • Apparel manufacturing at 7%

Fashion designers can choose to work in a wholesale setting creating fashion that will be sold on a more massive level at nationwide retailers, or you can choose to be self-employed and create high-fashion and custom apparel for a more niche audience.

The 2019 median pay for a fashion designer according to the BLS is $73,790 per year or $35.48 per hour. They also show a typical education of a bachelor's degree among those entering design, although you will find people do argue the value of this degree. The BLS also shows a job outlook between 2019-29 of -4%, putting it at a decline.
