Human resource management and event planning have a strong overlap in skills needed to be successful, and event planners often have business management degrees.

Both human resources managers and event planners need strong communications skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills. Both positions are filled by those with business management degrees and involve understanding client needs, creating criteria for meeting those needs, and conducting evaluations to determine if candidates meet those needs. Prospective event planners benefit from working n the hospitality industry, or from organizing university or volunteer events. Human resource managers who coordinate mass on-boarding of new employees offsite may also have experience and contacts that would be valuable for coordinating other events. Taking courses in communications, marketing, and hospitality may help bridge gaps in knowledge between human resources degrees and the skill set needed to excel in event planning. Certifications from professional organizations are available, which can give an advantage in finding employment, as they serve as an assurance of competence and professionalism.
