Georgia State University is considered a Predominately Black Institution. GSU receives federal grants as a result of is designation as a Predominately Black Institution. The funds from these federal grants are used to bolster programs that promote the university's efforts to serve low and middle income black Americans. Currently, 42 percent of the student population is black. White students make up the second highest percentage of the student population with 26 percent of the student body. The student population in GSU is incredibly diverse. More than 74 percent of the student population is made up of minorities or people of color (BIPOC). Institutions that were designated as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) were institutions that were established before 1964 with the principal mission of educating African Americans. The HSBU designation for these institutions was put in place with the intent to generate a federal government-wide effort to strengthen these institutions and to help HBCUs gain access to federally funded programs. Although Georgia State University is designated as a Predominately Black Institution; it is not included amongst the ten universities in Georgia that are designated as Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The ten Georgia universities/colleges that are included in the list of Historically Black Colleges and Universities are: Albany State University, Clark Atlanta University, Fort Valley State University, Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, Morris Brown College, Paine College, Savannah State University, and Spelman College.
