Prospective art teachers in New Mexico need to have between 24-36 semester hours in visual arts to be licensed in the Visual Arts. If you plan to pursue a visual arts certification for secondary students of K-12 students, 12 of those hours must be upper level courses. Online opportunities to earn credit hours in visual arts vary by institution and discipline, but most include demonstrating proficiency through a portfolio.

They must also pass a Content Knowledge Assessment, CKA, from the New Mexico Teacher Assessment (NMTA) or the Praxis test.

Teachers who are already licensed can add Visual Arts to their existing New Mexico teaching license by completing the above requirements or becoming certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Visual Arts.
