In the U.S., there are no specific education requirements for travel agents. Most job positions don't require travel agents to hold a degree or to have completed a formal training program. They usually require them to have at least a high school diploma and relevant work experience. Community colleges, vocational schools, and technical schools usually offer formal training programs for people that want to become travel agents. This training typically takes less than a year to complete. After gaining some experience, travel agents can apply for professional certification, which is not mandatory but provides better job opportunities. The Travel Institute offers the Certified Travel Associate (CTA) for new travel agents and the Certified Travel Counselor (CTC), which is aimed at experienced travel agents. To earn the CTC certification, travel agents need to have at least 5 years of work experience in this field.
