A Food Safety Manager certificate is intended for managers of public businesses serving food. A Food Safety Manager certificate differs from a Food Handler Certificate which is intended for employees in non-managerial positions working with food. Food Safety Manager certification trains managers on how to prevent foodborne illnesses. Certification courses are offered by accredited organizations such as ServSafe, which is accredited by the National Restaurant Association. Prior to registering for a certification course, candidates are encouraged to verify state and local requirements on licensing to certify what kind of training and certificates are necessary. Courses and exams are available online and in-classroom. Online courses and course materials can be purchased online through the ServSafe online store. ServSafe offers a tool to help locate course instructors or exam proctors in your area. Certification is awarded after successful completion of the exam. Food Safety Manager certificates are valid for five years.
