What kind of degree do you need to teach theology?
Question:
What kind of degree do you need to teach theology?
Perfect School Search
Answer:
Ideally, to teach theology, you should earn a degree in theology. While some colleges and universities offer a degree in theology, this degree is more commonly offered at seminaries and religious schools located throughout the United States. If you choose to study at one of these institutions, you should select a school that is supported by the religion you want to focus your studies on, such as Catholicism or Judaism.
Another option is to earn a degree in religious studies. This degree, which is sometimes combined with theology, is offered at most major colleges and universities in the United States and can be earned at the associate, bachelor, master, and doctorate levels. You also have the option of earning a religious studies degree online, if you prefer not to attend classes on campus.
You also could teach theology with a degree in ministerial studies. This is a less common degree, and you are more likely to find ministerial studies programs at seminaries and religious schools rather than secular colleges and universities. Sometimes, ministerial studies is part of the curriculum required for a degree that combines ministerial studies with theology and/or religious studies.
