Answer:

EMT certification and recertification processes are different depending on which state one has been certified in. However, national certification is also available. Typically, certification will last two to three years, after which certification will expire and one will be required to either become recertified or to renew their certification before it expires.

For Nationally Registered EMTs (NREMT), certification will last two years. Within this time period, if one plans on renewing their certification, they must complete one of two options. One of these is recertification by continuing education. This involves completing at least forty hours of continuing education; specifically, one must complete hours within the levels of national, state, and individual. The second option is recertification by examination. This does not require completing continuing education; instead, one only has to apply for and schedule the recertification exam, pay the exam fee, and pass the exam in one attempt.

EMT certification at the state level will vary slightly but is generally very similar. For example, in Connecticut, one must renew their certification before that certification expires. This involves completing forty hours of continued education following the same model as NREMT, or one must be currently certified by the NREMT. If one does not renew their certification within 90 days of the expiration date, they will not qualify for recertification and must complete a reinstatement process.

Other states, such as Texas, offer more recertification options; these include not only continuing education and being nationally registered, but also recertification by examination and a formal recertification course. It is recommended to check with one's own state government for details of recertification.
