The requirements for each type of training vary by specialization. For example, personal trainers will need to have different certifications than group fitness instructors. However, all fitness instructors typically have a high school diploma or higher. Recently, because of increasing competition, more employers are requiring their employees to hold an associate's or a bachelor's degree in health, kinesiology, or a similar field.

Employers usually give preference to certified candidates, or may require them to be certified before working with people. Group fitness instructors are not usually required to have a certification, but many employers may prefer them to be certified. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) has a list of accredited certifying agencies from which you can choose. Many times, you will also need training and certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillators (AED).
