Information About Careers Involving Design and Technology

Graphic Designer

Graphic designers work with clients to create visuals for advertisements, magazines, websites, billboards, and a variety of other print and online media. They sometimes draw designs by hand before digitizing them, or they use various types of design software to help in the creation process. Graphic designers must have a good eye for design in order to create visuals that are attractive and meet a client's requirements, as well as be skilled in using technology as they do much of their design work on a computer. To become a graphic designer, you will usually need a bachelor's degree in graphic design.

Industrial Designer

An industrial designer is a unique type of designer that primarily works in the manufacturing industry for a specific product, like motor vehicles, tools, toys, or kitchen appliances, to name a few possibilities. These designers create the sketches for the renderings of new product models, use specialized computer software to turn the sketches into models, and then actually build 3D models of the products. In addition to needing creative design skills to come up with new product designs, technology is a necessity for industrial designers as they use CAD software often as well as 3D printers. To become an industrial designer, you will usually need a bachelor's degree in a field like engineering or industrial design.

Web Developer

As a web developer, you will be responsible for working with clients who are in need of websites. You may work primarily on the back-end design of websites, which involves actually building the website through writing code and setting up the website's framework, or you could work as a front-end developer, which involves the overall appearance of the website, including the layout, color scheme, and website features. Regardless of whether you work in back-end, front-end, or both, this job requires both an in-depth understanding of technology as well as good design skills to create attractive and usable websites. To become a web developer, you will generally need an associate's degree in web design.

Software Developer

Software developers design different types of computer programs, either applications software or systems software. Applications software developers create programs that are generally used by the public, like games, word processing and photo-editing software, and other types of user-friendly applications that can be used on computers and smartphones. Systems software developers are responsible for building the actual computer systems that allow computers to operate correctly and to communicate with each other over a network. To become a software developer, you will usually need a computer science bachelor's degree.

Multimedia Artist

Much like a more traditional hands-on artist, multimedia artists often work in a particular medium like animation, special effects, or CGI. These artists use different types of computer software to create their designs or they first create designs by hand before converting them into a digital format using computer programs. Multimedia artists often work on projects like movies, TV shows, and advertisements. To become a multimedia artist, you will usually need a bachelor's degree in a field like art or computer graphics.
