Career Information for Jobs that Allow You to Work From Home

Fashion Designers

The BLS reported that as of 2014, 25% of fashion designers were self-employed. Fashion designers who are self-employed may choose to work from home, where they will develop designs and prototypes of things such as clothing, shoes or handbags. However, these professionals may need to travel occasionally to client locations or fashion shows to promote and sell their work. Fashion designers need a bachelor's degree, as well as artistic and creative skills so that they can come up with new design ideas and develop them effectively.

Postsecondary Teachers

Postsecondary teachers normally need a doctoral degree in their field. While it may not be common to think of this as a career that has work-from-home opportunities, there are opportunities to instruct students at the postsecondary level through online learning platforms. Postsecondary teachers develop lesson plans, teach classes and mark student work; those that teach online perform all of these tasks via computer.

Barbers, Hairdressers and Cosmetologists

Barbers, hairdressers and cosmetologists can be involved in cutting or styling hair, or performing treatments, such as facials. As of 2014, the BLS states that almost 50% of these professionals are self-employed, and it's an option for them to open their own salon in their home and build their own home-based business. To work in this profession, individuals must complete a state-approved cosmetology program and obtain a license. It's also possible to pursue further training and earn an associate's degree before entering this field.

Writers and Authors

According to the BLS, approximately 66% of writers and authors are self-employed. It's common for writers and authors to work from home, where they may spend time researching and developing ideas related to their material, writing books and articles, and making corrections to their work prior to publication. Those who seek formal employment in fields like marketing or PR, which offer work-from-home options on a freelance basis, will need a bachelor's degree.

Computer Systems Analysts

Computer systems analysts work to improve the computer systems that organizations use. This involves reviewing how the current systems work, identifying potential issues, and developing proposals to improve how the system operates. It's common for computer systems analysts to earn a bachelor's degree in computer science or a similar subject.

Craft and Fine Artists

Many professions fall within the category of craft and fine artists, including illustrators, jewelry artists and furniture makers. While craft and fine artists do not necessarily need formal training, they can improve their job prospects by earning a degree in art or a related field. They produce works of art in many forms and styles, and according to the BLS, almost half of craft and fine artists are self-employed; they may opt to have their studio at their residence so that they can work from home.
