Career Information for People Interested in Creative Writing

Writers and Authors

One of the most common or obvious career choices for those interested in creative writing would be that of a writer or author. These professionals create a wide array of written content in a variety of different media. For those interested in creative writing, you may specialize in writing poetry, fiction, songs, plays and more. Writers often work closely with editors to prepare their work for publication, which requires submitting multiple drafts of their work. Companies who hire full-time writers often require that employees have a bachelor's degree in English, journalism or a related field. However, those with excellent writing skills may not need a degree in the field, especially if they work on a freelance basis.

English Language and Literature Teachers, Postsecondary

English language and literature teachers at the postsecondary level may teach creative writing or incorporate it into their curriculum and assignments. Teachers at this level may also be responsible for overseeing graduate students and/or conducting independent projects in their field. Depending on the size of their institution, postsecondary teachers may need to help advise students on what courses to take. They may also serve on different academic or administrative committees. Most postsecondary educators need a Ph.D., but may be able to find a job at a smaller institution with a master's degree.

Recreational Therapists

Recreational therapists plan activities and treatment plans for their patients. They direct and coordinate these activities that help people with disabilities or who are recovering from illness or injury improve their overall health. Creative writing may be used to help promote emotional and social health, as well as arts and crafts, drama, music and more. For example, creative writing in the form of poetry has been shown to help veterans express their emotions and communicate in a new way. Recreational therapists will also use sports, aquatics and games to improve physical health. These professionals usually need a bachelor's degree and professional certification.

Public Relations Specialists

Public relations specialists are primarily responsible for creating a positive public image for their clients through press releases and social media. They may incorporate some creative writing to develop and maintain a positive, fun and/or interesting image of an organization's identity, as well as present facts and information concerning the organization and their campaigns. These specialists will also closely monitor public opinion concerning their clients, and work to help the organization respond and communicate effectively with their audience. Public relations specialists usually hold a bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, journalism, English or business.

Advertising and Promotions Managers

Similar to public relations specialists, advertising and promotions managers may have a background in business or communications, but their job may involve some creative thinking and writing. These managers plan, create and oversee advertising and promotional campaigns for a particular product, service or organization. Their main job is to generate public interest in the product. This requires creative ideas, slogans, taglines and more to get the word out about their product. Advertising and promotions managers need a bachelor's degree, and usually have some experience in the field.
