Chemical Biology Graduate Program Information
The program is available as a Master's of Science in Chemical Biology and requires about 30 course credits that may be covered in a period of 1-2 years. An oral qualifying exam may be needed for course completion. Lab rotations, relevant seminars and grant writing may be required for the master's degree. This course teaches the students biological procedures and their study with relation to chemistry. Students learn to approach the processes on various levels, including biochemical, anatomical and organic.
In this course, students research data they have gathered. The course covers molecular understanding and other basic principles that govern the collected data. Analysis of macromolecular processes in regards to quantity and quality are taught in detail.
This course covers the principles behind genetic analysis in organisms. The fundamentals forming the basis for the modern study of genetics and the logic and beliefs surrounding this are the focus of this course. A detailed understanding of the top genetic analyses available is a goal of this course.
The function of medicine on a molecular level is studied in this course. The effects of various medicines on the receptors, the expected result and the movement of the drug inside the body are also detailed. Students will then learn about the discovery and design of drugs used for ailments such as cancer, allergy and asthma.
This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of cellular biology. Various issues in organisms and their cell structures are explored. The hypothesis that living matter arises from other living matter is studied at the molecular level.
Admission Requirements for Master's in Chemical Biology
A bachelor's degree and a strong foundation in chemistry, biology and biochemistry from a recognized institute are required to take up a master's in chemical biology. Excellent academic records are preferred, and letters of recommendation and a personal letter of intent stating interest in chemistry and biology interface are needed. Foreign students may be required to submit TOEFL scores, and many schools require GRE scores for all master's applicants. Minimum GPA in an undergraduate degree program and a personal interview may be necessary at some colleges.
A strong foundation in chemistry and biology and an interest in the overlapping of these two major sciences are good reasons to pursue a master's in chemical biology. Throughout this degree program, students will study such common courses as genetics, pharmacology, and cellular biology.
