Description of the Christian Colleges in Texas with Good Theatre Programs
Students interested in studying theatre can choose from several top, Christian colleges in the state of Texas. Students considering these schools may also think about how the college will help them grow spiritually and/or the size of the school. Here we discuss what makes a few of the theatre programs at these schools some of the best in the state.
Southern Methodist University
Southern Methodist University had slightly more than 6,450 undergraduate students, according to the NCES, in 2017. The university has the Division of Theatre, which offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre with a specialization in acting or theatre studies and minors in musical theatre and the history of visual and performing arts. According to the school's website, the program is highly regarded nationally and only admits 20 to 25 students from more than 300 auditions each year. Students in these programs have the opportunity to try a variety of positions in the field, such as directing, designing or playwriting. Spiritual life on campus includes university worship services, resident community chaplains and a wide range of campus ministries, including International Student Fellowship, Athletes in Action and Young Life.
Texas Christian University
Texas Christian University offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Theatre and a BFA in Theatre with available emphases in acting, theatre studies, musical theatre, production and design. Students in these programs can participate in theatre productions and/or internship opportunities with local theatres in various positions, including actor, set designer or production assistant. Students can grow spiritually through the Disciples Campus Ministry, which includes small groups, spiritual retreats and spiritual events, such as Table Time (fellowship meal) and the Shabbat Retreat. In 2017, the NCES reported that the university had about 9,010 undergraduates.
Southwestern University promotes spiritual growth in its students by offering chapel services, religious lectures, Spring Breakaway service projects and various religious organizations, such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), YoungLife College and Better Together (interfaith group). According to the NCES, the undergraduate university had close to 1,400 students in 2017. The school's theatre department offers a BA in the field and offers theatre scholarships and numerous work-study positions for students. Students in the program can also participate in various High Impact Learning Experiences through the department, including local and international internships, a London semester abroad and the Guest Artist Series.
As of 2017, Baylor University had close to 14,320 undergraduate students, per the NCES. The university offers a BA in Theatre and a BFA in Theatre Studies, Theatre Design and Technology or Theatre Performance. Students in these programs can gain hands-on experience through one or more of the theatre department's eight yearly productions and/or through the department's summer study abroad program that they offer every other year. The school also has unique housing opportunities for theatre arts students at the Fine Arts Living-Learning Center. For their spiritual lives, students can participate in chapel services, sports or youth ministries, missions and various religious organizations on campus, including the Baylor Religious Hour Choir, Unite InterVarsity Christian Fellowship or FaceTime with God.
Abilene Christian University
Abilene Christian University offers a BFA in Theatre with available tracks in acting, theatre ministry, design/technical, theatre education, directing or musical theatre. The Department of Theatre has multiple performance spaces and each summer the department produces the Abilene Shakespeare Festival. Students on campus must invest in their spiritual lives by earning 55 spiritual formation credits every semester through activities like chapel services, Bible studies, community service, mission trips and the Service Action Leadership Team (SALT). The university had about 3,670 undergraduate students in 2017, according to the NCES.
