Description of Christian Colleges with Architecture Majors
Several different Christian colleges offer architecture majors that prepare students for careers in the field or to continue their studies in a professional program and earn licensure as an architect. These schools also care for students' spiritual growth in different ways. Explore some of these schools and what they have to offer.
Judson University in Illinois had about 1,080 undergraduate students in 2017, per the NCES. The university's major in architecture first trains students to create their designs by hand, followed by training in digital tools. Students in the program focus on design concepts the first two years and then learn how to apply these concepts with real projects the last two years. Once students complete this curriculum, they can matriculate into the school's professional Master of Architecture (MArch) program. The master's degree is approved by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), a common prerequisite for licensure. The school encourages spiritual growth in its students through chapel services, small groups and social justice activities as well as global outreach and service opportunities.
Michigan's Andrews University has a bachelor's degree program in architecture that includes lecture courses, seminars and design studios. Students in the program also have the opportunity to participate in unique study tours, such as a 5-week study tour in Europe, and hands-on service experiences in architecture. Students who complete the 4-year undergraduate curriculum with an acceptable GPA can advance to the NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture program. The school promotes faith development through church services, Grow Groups, volunteer and service opportunities and other religious programming, like Proximity Vespers, Service Days and Table Talks. In 2017, the NCES reported that the university had a little over 1,700 undergraduate students.
California Baptist University
Students at California Baptist University can grow spiritually through chapel services, local and global service opportunities, men's and women's ministries and discipleship groups, called Tribes. According to the NCES, the university had a little over 7,410 undergraduate students in 2017. The university offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Architecture program that prepares students for graduate study or a career in architecture after graduation. The curriculum includes courses in architectural history, architectural theory, design studio and computer modeling. Students who complete them can pursue the university's MArch, which is scheduled to be fully accredited by the NAAB in 2018.
Bob Jones University
Bob Jones University in South Carolina had close to 2,610 undergraduate students in 2017, according to the NCES. The university has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Interior Architecture and Design program that combines architectural concepts with aspects of interior design, including sustainable design and graphic presentation. Students in the program complete a senior internship for hands-on experience and develop a professional portfolio throughout the program. Spiritual life on campus includes multiple chapel services each week, prayer and worship events, an annual Bible conference, outreach opportunities and ministry projects.
Catholic University of America
The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., is home to the School of Architecture and Planning, which offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Architecture, a BA in Architectural Studies and a unique combined BS in Architecture and Bachelor of Civil Engineering. Students have the opportunity to participate in architecture study-abroad programs and utilize the nation's capital as a design laboratory. Those who wish to become licensed architects can pursue an accelerated course of study in the university's NAAB-accredited MArch program. Students on campus can also further develop their faith through Mass, spiritual retreats, mission trips, service opportunities, spiritual guidance with campus ministers and religious groups, like Encounter the Spirit (prayer and worship group). In 2017, the university had close to 3,320 undergraduate students, per the NCES.
