Description of Christian Colleges with Good TESOL Programs
Good TESOL programs typically include plenty of hands-on learning opportunities and interactions with various non-English speaking populations. Here we discuss some of the Christian colleges and their TESOL programs more in-depth, as well as some of their other unique characteristics.
Indiana's Huntington University had close to 1,080 undergraduate students in 2017, according to the NCES. The university offers a Master of Education in TESOL, Master of Arts in Ministry and TESOL or a TESOL/ESL Certificate, all are available online, as well as an on-campus undergraduate certificate and minor in the field. Students receive hands-on training through practicums and graduates in the program are currently working in a wide range of countries, including Macau, Honduras and Romania. Each year, the university selects a Bible verse for students and spiritual programs to focus on and provides students with chapel services, prayer meetings, small groups, mission opportunities and community service programs to help them grow spiritually.
Appalachian Bible College
Appalachian Bible College in West Virginia offers a unique bachelor's degree program in missions with a concentration in TESOL. Students in the program participate in a 4 to 6-week internship overseas for hands-on experience, as well as participate in weekly tutoring of local non-English speakers. Students on campus can grow spiritually through weekly chapel services, devotions, Prayer Partners, small groups (Checkmates) and other special, spiritual events, such as Missions Conference each fall. According to the NCES, the college had a little over 270 undergraduates in 2017.
Spring Arbor University
Spring Arbor University in Michigan helps support students' spiritual growth through chapel services, which are also available online, spiritual retreats, mission trips, outreach programs and fellowship groups, including Athletes for Christ and Professor-Led Bible Studies. As of 2017, the university had about 1,960 undergraduate students. The school offers a unique online Master of Arts in TESOL that has two tracks- a K-12 track for certified teachers and an adolescent and adult education track for professionals. According to the school's website, SR Education Group ranked the school #14 in 2018 for the best online college category for ESL teaching degrees.
New York's Houghton College had 1,030 undergraduates in 2017, per the NCES. The college offers a TESOL major that requires a minimum of 100 hours of field experience with a certified ESL teacher. Students can also participate in the Teaching in Urban America program for hands-on experience during a two-week immersion in Buffalo, NY, as well as a Junior Practicum and full-semester of student teaching during their senior year. Students can deepen their faith through chapel services, prayer groups, mentoring sessions, Bible studies and service opportunities, like volunteering as a ''Big Brother/Big Sister'' for children in the community.
California Baptist University
At the undergraduate level, California Baptist University offers a TESOL minor, TESOL certificate and bachelor's degree in intercultural studies with a concentration in TESOL, while at the graduate level students can pursue a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in TESOL or a Master of Science in Education with a specialization in TESOL. These programs are available in a variety of formats (on-campus, online or hybrid) and the graduate programs include coursework in research in the field. Students at the university can grow in their faith through small groups, chapel services (also available online as podcasts) and local and/or global serving opportunities. The university had a little over 7,410 undergraduates in 2017, according to the NCES.
