Description of the Christian Colleges with Kinesiology Programs
Many different institutions have a Department of Kinesiology that offers a range of majors and programs, such as exercise science or physical education, but there are also several schools that offer programs specifically in kinesiology. Here we explore a few of those programs, as well as some of the spiritual growth opportunities the schools provide students.
University of Mobile
The University of Mobile had close to 1,380 undergraduate students in 2016, per the NCES. The university offers a kinesiology major with a minor or a kinesiology minor, as well as other kinesiology-related tracks, like sport ministry, exercise science, physical education and pre-professional programs. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology are required to take a course in kinesiology research and an internship/seminar course for hands-on learning. Full-time undergraduates at the school are required to attend at least 10 chapel services each semester and can participate in university ministries, such as Youth Hostel Missions (sharing the Gospel throughout Europe), Project Serve (serving the local community) and the Bridge (serving in different cultural contexts).
Texas Christian University
Texas Christian University has a Master of Science in Kinesiology, but also offers kinesiology-related bachelor's degree programs in areas like movement science, athletic training, pre-physical therapy and health and fitness. The master's degree program in kinesiology allows students to choose from concentrations in motor control, exercise physiology, sport psychology, exercise psychology or nutrition, physical activity and chronic disease. In 2016, the university had about 8,890 undergraduates and about 1,500 graduate students in 2016, according to the NCES. The school's campus ministry, called Disciples on Campus (DOC), offers weekly, semester and annual programming designed to encourage spiritual growth. Some of these programs include a Sabbath Retreat each semester, Monday CommUnity meetings with worship, prayer and fellowship and weekly Table Talks small groups.
Ouachita Baptist University
Ouachita Baptist University has a weekly, student-led worship gathering, called Refuge, and many different missions trip opportunities, such as spring break trips and summer-long missions with Face 2 Face in East Asia, for students wishing to grow in and share their faith. The NCES reported that the undergraduate university had a little over 1,490 students in 2016. The university offers a unique Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology and Leisure Studies that has available emphasis options in areas like recreation, pre-professional, teaching and fitness. Students may also choose to participate in the school's Kinesiology Club or national professional fraternity, Phi Epsilon Kappa, for students in exercise science, physical education and other kinesiology-related majors.
According to the NCES, Vanguard University had about 1,790 undergraduate students in 2016. The school has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology program with a concentration in pre-health professions or health and human performance. Students in the program receive practical, field-based experience and can participate in kinesiology research. Vanguard University also provides students with a variety of outreach opportunities and chapel services to help further develop their spiritual lives. The school has a few unique student ministry teams, including their traveling worship team, From the Vine, and their sketch comedy teams, Delivery Boys and Entourage (all female).
Gordon College also offers a bachelor's degree program in kinesiology where students have access to a state-of-the-art anatomy and physiology lab. In the lab students get hands-on experience working with EKG treadmill testing, studying cadavers and using Vicon Nexus motion capture. Gordon College had about 1,660 undergraduate students in 2016, per the NCES. Students can deepen their faith through chapel and worship gatherings, local and global serving opportunities, spiritual formation groups and small groups and DEEP FAITH week on campus where the college prays and worships collectively.
