Overview of Musical Theatre Programs

Several of these schools have a chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, a national theatre honor society. Each school's curriculum offers unique opportunities, such as courses in branding and marketing, to prepare students for a career in musical theatre. Faith-focused opportunities include various service and worship activities on campus.

Abilene Christian University

Abilene Christian University offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre with a concentration in musical theatre. As part of the curriculum, students will participate in school productions and have the opportunity to complete a semester in New York City or study abroad. Abilene's core values include a commitment to stewardship and a challenge to excel. The university offers many performing arts clubs, such as the Omega Dance Company, several a capella groups, and a percussion ensemble. Students interested in community service can join the Service Action Leadership Team (SALT), which provides opportunities like visiting senior citizens and helping with year-end recycling. The university had 5,145 students in 2017, as per NCES.

Illinois Wesleyan University

Illinois Wesleyan University had 1,649 students for the fall 2017 semester, as listed on NCES. The University's learning environment is centered on critical thinking, creativity, and communication. Students will earn a BFA in Music Theatre at Illinois Wesleyan. The program consists of coursework like dramatic theory, history, and singing. Student service groups include Habitat for Humanity, Circle K, and Colleges Against Cancer. Faith-focused clubs on campus include the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Interfaith organization, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and Delight, which is a women's group.

Messiah College

Messiah College's mission statement is Christ Preeminent, which describes a life committed to service and worship. The college offers chapel services on Tuesday mornings and evenings, as well as Thursday evenings. Students must attend at least 14 chapel services throughout the school year. Campus clubs include the National Association of Music Education and Alpha Psi Omega. Messiah's musical theatre program leads to a BFA and provides opportunities to audition for summer theatre or touring musicals, as well as completing a semester abroad in Dublin. NCES lists a 2017 student enrollment of 3,331 at this college.

Wayland Baptist University

According to NCES, Wayland Baptist University welcomed 4,847 students for the 2017-2018 school year. Students will need to audition for the musical theatre BFA program. The curriculum includes courses like jazz, audition and performance, and ballet. Wayland has a chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, which requires an overall GPA of 2.5 and 3.0 in theatre. Other student activities include Wayland Singers and and an international choir. All of the university's curriculum is designed to create a Christian-focused learning environment that encourages professional success and service to others.

Shenandoah University

Shenandoah University's musical theatre BFA is a unique program that offers the Meisner acting technique, along with courses on marketing and branding. Students will participate in a senior showcase that is attended by directors and agents. The university's mission is to encourage students to think analytically and offer meaningful contributions to society. Shenandoah offers worship services on Sundays at 12:00 PM, along with a student-led service on Wednesdays at 10:00 PM. NCES lists a student population of 3,844 in 2017.
