Florida Colleges with Christian Counseling Programs

Christian counseling programs are not as plentiful in Florida as more traditional counseling programs. However, there are a few colleges and seminaries that offer these programs at the bachelor's and master's degree levels.

Asbury Theological Seminary

One of three graduate offerings on this list, the pastoral counseling Master of Arts program at Asbury Theological Seminary is made up of 60 credits. This program is created for individuals who wish to work in a church-based or non-profit organization counseling those in need. If you have completed a religion degree at another college, you can have up to 12 credits put toward your master's degree program. Some of the courses you'll study include pastoral crisis intervention, cross-cultural counseling, marriage and family counseling, personality development, and Wesleyan theology.

Additionally, Asbury requires all seminary students to complete a 3-semester mentored ministry based on your major. Here, you'll spend time working in the community with a mentor who will help you gain the best service experience you can get related to counseling. Though Asbury's main campus is in Kentucky, the MA program is also available on its Florida Dunnam campus in Orlando.

South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary

South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary requires students in the undergraduate counseling, business, and ministry programs to complete a 100-hour practicum. The B.A. in Christian counseling program at South Florida takes about four years to complete. It can be completed either on campus or online. This 120-credit program includes two possible specialties: clinical counseling or marriage & family counseling.

South Florida also offers a master's degree in pastoral counseling that requires 60 credit hours of coursework and includes several practicum and internship placements. Chapel is held on campus several times throughout the month.

St. Thomas University

St. Thomas University's campus ministry offers prayer and worship services daily as well as Sunday masses. Students can also participate in retreats, service activities, campus fellowship events, and a program for individuals who want to learn more about becoming Catholic. The university's Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministries program can prepare gradates for careers in pastoral counseling, and students have the option of pursuing a religious education concentration. This master's degree program includes courses in human and faith development, social justice, and of course, pastoral counseling. This program is available on campus, online, or as a hybrid format.

Trinity Baptist College

The Christian counseling Bachelor of Science program at Trinity Baptist College includes over 50 hours of instruction in behavioral studies. Along with counseling techniques and theories, you'll look at some of the issues and controversies found in Christian counseling. This program also includes a practicum. The ministry teams at Trinity Baptist include a worship group called LifeSong. There is also a worship band and a gospel choir to get involved with if your passion is music. If athletics is more your speed, there are three men's teams and four women's teams to join.
