Many active duty servicemembers are interested in pursuing postsecondary education, either to advance within the military or to prepare for life after service. With the time restraints of their duties, servicemembers don't always have the luxury of traveling a great distance. Thankfully, there are many education options in close proximity to military bases.

Central Texas College

Located in Killeen, Texas, Central Texas College is a public 2-year college that offers a complete package of quality education, flexibility and convenience through its certificate and associate's degree programs in the technical, academic and professional fields. The programs and classes are designed to accommodate the schedule of a servicemember. The CTC Central Campus is only 2.1 miles away from Fort Hood allowing military students and their families to access quality education within their locality. By attending the campus itself instead of having their classes on the base or online, military students get to experience the traditional college environment away from the base. The in-state tuition at this college is relatively low and students get to enjoy tuition assistance, scholarships and other forms of financial aid.

Kansas State University

Located in Manhattan, Kansas, Kansas State University is proudly home to the state's largest military population seeking higher education. Its Manhattan campus is only 13 miles from Fort Riley and with a 15-minute drive, military students have the opportunity to experience college life while undertaking undergraduate, graduate and non-credit programs. Kansas State University is known for upholding excellence with its faculty, numerous academic offerings and research projects.

Kansas State University tailors its programs to help the students meet their needs, achieve their goals and find their passion. Military students are particularly recognized and offered evening programs and accelerated programs to accommodate their limited time and strict schedules.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is an institution of higher learning dedicated to offering programs in engineering, aerospace, aviation, security, and business. The university has a number of locations in the United States, including one at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii 4.2 miles from the Marine Corps base. The university has maintained a relationship with the military for a long time and is dedicated to training veterans and servicemembers on active duty. Besides undergraduate certifications, servicemembers can also earn associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees and master's degrees that could prove useful for their roles in the military and after retirement.

University of Tampa

The University of Tampa is only 7.50 miles away from MacDill Air Force Base. The university is committed to creating a program that benefits military students both during study and after graduating. Students can choose from a number of certificate, undergraduate and graduate degree programs available. The University of Tampa is not only suitable for persons already serving in the military, it is also for students who wish to undertake the ROTC program. The institution offers comprehensive training programs meant to challenge the students physically and mentally, and to build their self-confidence and leadership abilities. Upon graduation, students become commissioned officers of the United States military.

Olympic College

At the heart of Bremerton, Washington sits the urban 2-year Olympic College. The institution offers a number of certificate and associate's degree courses in technical programs and intensive English, among others. Olympic College is only 11.8 miles away from Naval Base Kitsap. Students get help preparing for the next phase of their lives and careers through the numerous educational opportunities offered. Studying at Olympic College assures you of a chance to acquire job training, personal enrichment and increased job skills, whichever goal you are focusing on. Most recently, the college introduced degree programs for Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and the Bachelor of Applied Science in Information Systems at the Bremerton campus.
