All students begin a research project within their first year, which ends in a dissertation. During your second year of enrollment, you'll also participate in a practicum that includes 510 hours with the university's Student Counseling Services. You'll also spend anywhere from 600 to 800 hours at another clinical setting in or around the Minneapolis area.

At St. Mary's, you have a few choices for studying counseling psychology. The first is the Master of Arts in Counseling and Psychological Services program. The standalone M.A. can prepare you for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) designations. With the certificate, you can also become a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

Also available at St. Mary's is a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Counseling Psychology. The goal of this program is to provide students with the means to promote social justice and become excellent counselors. The doctoral program takes a total of five years to complete, with four years in a classroom and one year in an internship.
