North Carolina Schools Offering Graduate Programs in Counseling Psychology

University of North Carolina, Charlotte

Aspiring counselors entering UNC Charlotte can pick from a few different levels of study. To begin, a Master of Arts is available in counseling. You can choose from four concentrations: clinical mental health, school, addictions, and play therapy. Each program holds distinct concentration areas, allowing counselors to become specialized in one type of industry. If you already possess a master's degree in counseling, you can earn a certificate in school counseling to transition to another field within the practice. Finally, UNC Charlotte hosts a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision program. This could prepare you for an advanced clinical position or a career as a college or university professor.

North Carolina State University

NC State University in Raleigh is home to a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The program comes in on-campus and online formats. Choosing the online format results in a three-year curriculum that begins in the first summer session of their first year. If you attend courses on campus, you could finish in two years, provided you are able to attend your internship during the spring semester of your scheduled year. Some of the courses included in this master's program include group counseling, cross-cultural counseling, and clinical assessment.

North Carolina A&T State University

With NCA&T in Greensboro, you can choose from three different tracks once you enter the Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling program. You'll choose from clinical, rehabilitation, and school counseling tracks for this degree. If you look at the list and find more than one area that interests you, you can choose to double major in two of the three tracks. Four graduate certificates are available: marriage and family counseling; rehabilitation counseling and behavior addictions; rehabilitation psychology and behavioral medicine; and vocational evaluation and work adjustment. If you are interested in deep research, a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Counseling and Rehabilitation Counselor Education can be earned.

Western Carolina University

Two types of master's degrees are available through WCU in Cullowhee. You could go for a Master of Arts in Education in School Counseling, where you will prepare for a career inside an elementary, middle, or high school. You will also be ready to take the license exam through the state of North Carolina once you finish the degree program. Additionally, there is the Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. This degree program is a bit more diverse in its qualifications for your employment. You might find work in a mental health center, substance abuse rehabilitation clinic, or somewhere in the non-profit industry.

University of North Carolina, Greensboro

At UNC's other location, three concentrations are available for those who want a Master of Science in Counseling: school counseling, clinical mental health counseling, and couple and family counseling. Should you decide that you want to concentrate in two areas, you will earn both the M.S. and a Specialist in Education degree. UNC Greensboro also offers a Ph.D. in Counseling and Educational Development. You'll come up with your own research focus and contribute scholarly articles while deepening your focus within the field of counseling.

Admissions Requirements for Counseling Psychology Graduate Programs in North Carolina

If you are looking to start a graduate program in counseling psychology, you will need a bachelor's degree. GRE scores should be sent through the ETS website to the school(s) where you are applying. In some cases, you will need to respond to essay prompts when writing your personal statement. For a Ph.D program, you should keep your graduate GPA as high as possible, as many places expect a minimum of a 3.5 for potential doctoral students. Work experience may be required for graduate applicants.

Specializations are available in different areas once you begin to study graduate-level counseling psychology in North Carolina. If you can't pick just one, you may be able to turn two concentrations into a dual degree or double major.
