Yeshiva University

Yeshiva University, located in New York City, offers a 5-year PsyD program that has a focus on both school psychology and clinical psychology and also features concentration in cognitive behavior therapy or psychodynamic psychotherapy. This is a 110-credit program that includes various coursework in psychodynamic theory, child therapy, cognitive assessment, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Also, if you complete courses on the practice of psychology in bilingual populations and other specific courses, you will be prepared to apply for New York State Bilingual School Psychologist certification. Along with coursework, you must complete 1,750 hours of externship experiences as well as a research project. The final requirement to earn your PsyD is a full-year internship that can require up to 1,750 hours of experience.

Alfred University

Located in the city of Alfred, Alfred University has a 120-credit hour PsyD degree program that could help you become a licensed psychologist and a certified school psychologist. In this program, you are required to complete 3 years of coursework and practicum experiences. Your classes could center on such subjects as school psychology, developmental psychology, academic interventions, and family therapy. A dissertation will also be required, which you begin to work on in your 3rd year. The final 4th year is spent completing a pre-doctoral internship in school psychology.

Long Island University

Long Island University has a clinical psychology PsyD program that is located on the LIU Post campus in Brookville. You are required to earn 114 credits in this program with possible classes on the topics of assessment of children, developmental psychology, cognitive therapy, and clinical interviewing. You are also required to choose two concentration areas, which could be serious mental illness, interventions with high-risk families, dialectical behavior therapy, or assessment and treatment of substance use disorders. In addition to a dissertation, other degree requirements include externships, attendance at program lectures, completion of a Clinical Competency Evaluation (CCE), practicums, and a full-time internship.

University at Albany, State University of New York

In Albany, the University at Albany offers a PsyD degree program that centers on the practice of school psychology. This is a 94-credit hour program that could include courses on psychopharmacology, cognitive psychology, group dynamics, research methodologies, and human development. You are also required to complete practicum and field experiences, engage in research activities, including research projects, and a dissertation. In total, this is a 5-year program that includes 4 years of coursework and practicums and a full 1-year internship.

Roberts Wesleyan College

Roberts Wesleyan College, which is located in Rochester, offers a PsyD degree program that features a curriculum that focuses on both school and clinical psychology. You are required to earn 96 credits with a dissertation and courses that cover such subjects as developmental psychology, play therapy, social-cognitive psychology, and prevention and intervention. Entrance Requirements for PsyD Programs

Generally, to apply to a PsyD program, you must already hold a bachelor's degree. Also, while some programs require a bachelor's degree in psychology, other programs accept applicants from outside of the field of psychology. Further, many PsyD programs require that you have completed undergraduate coursework in psychology. The general GRE test is required for all programs with some programs also requiring or recommending the psychology subject test as well. Other application materials are an application, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose.

PsyD programs in New York are a full-time commitment that require coursework, practicums, field experiences, and a 1-year pre-doctoral internship. Admission to these programs usually requires that you have completed some coursework in psychology, with some programs preferring that applicants have a bachelor's degree in psychology.
