NYC-Based Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Programs

Yeshiva University

Yeshiva University offers a PsyD in School-Clinical Child Psychology degree program that combines both clinical and school psychology in order to prepare you for a career in a school, medical center, or early childhood center. In this 5-year program, you could take coursework in such subjects as child therapy, psychoeducational assessment, lifespan development, and adult psychopathology, and you also need to work with a research mentor in a lab setting. Next, you are required to complete externships that usually take place in a school, hospital, or mental health facility and will allow you to accumulate 1,750 hours of supervised clinical training. Other degree requirements include a research project and a full-time internship. Through this program, you may be able to earn certification as a bilingual school psychologist if you complete the required courses.

St. John's University

At St. John's University, you can earn a 105-credit PsyD in School Psychology degree in 5 years. This particular program consists of three tracks: the general track, the bilingual track that prepares you for bilingual certification and includes special practicums and coursework, and an advanced standing track that is for those with a master's and certification in school psychology. The general and bilingual tracks include a variety of coursework, including classes on psychoeducational assessment, developmental psychology, interviewing skills, and cognitive psychotherapies. These two tracks also require you to complete a comprehensive examination, take the Praxis II examination, and write a dissertation. Clinical competencies and a year-long internship are required, as well. The advanced standing track requires 50 credits at minimum, practicums, a dissertation, and school psychology internships.

Pace University

Pace University has a 110-credit hour PsyD in School and Clinical Child Psychology. Your first year in this program is spent completing coursework in psychological assessment, developmental psychology, and diagnosing learning disabilities and taking a qualifying exam at the end of the year. Then, in years 2-4, you take more coursework, complete practicums, and take the comprehensive exam and the proficiency exam. At this point, you should have enough credits to earn an M.S. Ed. in School Psychology, which you must earn before earning your PsyD. Your 5th year will consist of a year-long internship and a doctoral project.

Admittance Requirements for NYC PsyD Programs

To apply to a New York City PsyD program, you must hold a bachelor's or master's degree, and if that degree is outside the field of psychology, you may be required to take prerequisite coursework. However, some programs may require prerequisite psychology coursework regardless of the type of degree you hold. You also need to submit an application, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. PsyD programs in New York City also require GRE scores, as well. Finally, if you pass the initial application process, you will be required to undergo an interview process.
