Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) programs may be of interest to students who want to prepare for careers as licensed professional psychologists. Practicing psychologists may work in a variety of settings where they assess and counsel individuals, groups, families, and/or couples. Listed below are three schools offering APA-accredited PsyD programs in the state of Texas, followed by their common entrance requirements.

Texas Schools Offering Doctor of Psychology Programs

Baylor University

Baylor University in Waco, TX, offers a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology program that aims to develop psychologist practitioners who contribute to the field and serve a variety of populations. The program provides supervised clinical experiences as well as a curriculum based on clinical assessments. In addition to studying the theoretical backgrounds of clinical practice, students are heavily involved in clinical research to prepare for a practice-based career. Students take courses in cognitive-behavior therapy, psychological assessments, psychopathology, and clinical intervention procedures for children. This is a 5-year program where students take courses during the first four years and then complete an internship at an APA-accredited internship site during the fifth year.

University of Houston - Clear Lake

The University of Houston's Clear Lake campus offers a Doctor of Psychology in Health Service Psychology program that seeks to train students in clinical practice for schools and other clinical environments. The 75-credit-hour doctoral program focuses on health services and cognitive-behavioral psychology. Upon completion of this program, graduates should be prepared to seek state licensure and enter roles as licensed psychologists. Coursework may include topics in health service psychology, quantitative analysis, personality assessments, and behavior therapy. Students are also assessed in clinical- and research-based experiences.

Our Lady of the Lake University

Located in San Antonio, Our Lady of the Lake University offers a Doctor of Psychology in Counseling Psychology program. The program is full time and can usually be completed within four years, followed by a year of internship experience. Students are trained in assessment psychology by working with individuals and families. Core topics may include health psychology, professional practice, personality assessment, and behavioral neuroscience. Students who are bilingual may also acquire a certificate in Psychological Services for Spanish Speaking Populations (PSSSP), which would prepare graduates to perform psychological services for Spanish-speaking clients.

Doctor of Psychology Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for a PsyD program differ by school. Some schools require applicants to already have a master's degree in psychology or a related field, while other programs only require a bachelor's (and students earn a master's during the PsyD program). Schools may also require students to meet certain GPA requirements, such as 3.4 or 3.5 or higher, or to have completed specific prerequisite courses. GRE scores are also often required, and schools may require previous professional experiences and for students to submit research publications, such as projects or a thesis. Additionally, schools may require a resume, statement of purpose, and three letters of recommendation. Upon submitting their applications, students may be subjected to an on-campus interview.
