Career Information for Engineering Jobs that Help People

Biomedical Engineers

Biomedical engineers are constantly advancing the field of healthcare by designing new technologies and equipment. They combine their engineering background with knowledge of biological and medical science to develop, repair, update and maintain medical devices, software and more. They also evaluate the safety of equipment, train healthcare workers on the proper use of equipment and write a variety of reports and research findings. Their research and advancements in the field work to the benefit of many patients in the healthcare system. Biomedical engineers usually need a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering or bioengineering, and graduate degrees in the field are available.

Chemical Engineers

Chemical engineers solve problems in the manufacturing and production process of various kinds of products that involve chemicals. In this way, their work often keeps production workers and consumers safe from harmful and hazardous materials. These professionals develop safety procedures and conduct tests on the production of things like food, drugs, fuel and more. They also conduct research on how to improve processes and evaluate the equipment that is used. Chemical engineers need a bachelor's degree in the field, and practical experience is a plus.

Civil Engineers

Civil engineers are responsible for designing and overseeing different kinds of construction projects. Without them, we would not have safe bridges, buildings, roads, water systems, airports and other infrastructures that we rely on every day. They carefully plan the details for these structures, evaluate costs, test building materials, oversee surveying observations and manage the building of the structure. They are also responsible for overseeing any necessary repairs and maintenance. These professionals need at least a bachelor's degree, but are likely to need a graduate degree and license for advancement.

Electrical Engineers

Electrical engineers design a wide variety of electrical equipment that we use daily and may aid in communication, transportation, entertainment and more. They create new and modify existing equipment like motors, radar systems and power generation equipment. They also test equipment to make sure it is safe and meets required codes, as well as evaluate any problems or concerns with a product. Electrical engineers must hold a bachelor's degree, and practical experience is preferred.

Environmental Engineers

Environmental engineers work to solve environmental problems, which in turn can improve overall human health. They combine engineering principles with the natural sciences to design projects to protect or improve the environment, such as ways to improve recycling or control air pollution. They collect and analyze environmental data to closely monitor and evaluate the projects for environmental improvement. These professionals should also have some practical experience and a bachelor's degree.

Health and Safety Engineers

Health and safety engineers are probably the engineers that most directly help people. Their job consists of developing safety procedures and identifying and evaluating potential hazards to human health and safety. They may examine chemicals, machinery, software, safety devices and more to make sure they are being installed and handled properly to prevent injury or illness. They must have a working knowledge of current regulations and be prepared to make recommendations for improvements as needed. Health and safety engineers usually have a bachelor's degree in an area of engineering, but may also have a background in occupational or industrial hygiene.
