Education Requirements for ESL Teacher Certification in Minnesota
Prior to earning a license for ESL teaching in Minnesota, you must complete an undergraduate program in education, which includes a teacher education component. You will begin student teaching around the start of your final year in the degree program, gaining vital experience before venturing out and teaching without direct supervision. A Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education allows you to explore courses such as creating environments for learning, stretch composition, and field experience for the diverse classroom. This degree is meant for those who wish to teach students between kindergarten and sixth grade. For older classrooms, a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts and Literature Education, with a concentration in English, allows you to teach fifth through twelfth grade. Some of the courses you take might include methods of tutoring writing, Shakespeare: the art of the dramatist, and educational psychology.
After your undergraduate program is over, you can start additional classes to earn your license for teaching English as a second language. These courses can be taught on a flexible schedule to work around your existing teaching schedule. Topics covered in the classes to earn your license will cover second language curriculum design, English grammar for ESL teachers, and teaching literacy. Another student teaching practicum for ESL topics is necessary to earn this license.

Test Requirements for ESL Teacher Certification in Minnesota
Regardless of specialization or grade level, each future teacher is required to pass the MTLE Essential Academic Skills (EAS) Test. The exam is composed of three subsections in mathematics, reading, and writing, the last of which contains a long-form writing assignment. Each test contains an assortment of multiple-choice questions. The EAS can be taken with all three subtests in one session, or broken up into multiple test appointments.
Pedagogy tests are designed for three specific grade levels: secondary (ninth through twelfth grade), elementary (kindergarten through sixth grade), and early childhood (birth through third grade). These multiple-choice exams have two parts each, and both parts of each exam must be passed to continue through the licensing process. Finally, the content-area test for English as a Second Language contains the same format and passing requirements as the pedagogy tests. Each subsection requires one hour to take.
