Below, we will look at five of these Executive MBA programs in greater detail.

Overview of Executive MBA Programs in Washington D.C.

Georgetown University

Georgetown University offers an Executive MBA program that enrolled students can complete in 20 months by attending courses on-campus every other Friday and Saturday. In addition, students must participate in four week-long residencies during the program, two of which are local and two of which are international. The first local residency takes place at the beginning of the program and presents students with a case study of a real-world business problem that students work towards solving through collaboration with their classmates. Later in the program, students will complete an entrepreneurial project that simulates starting a new business in the D.C. area. The two international residency programs focus first on tackling actual problems faced by international companies and then on the topic of globalization at large. In addition to the residencies, students will complete a core curriculum course list during the first year of the program before taking more advanced coursework during the second year.

University of Virginia

The University of Virginia offers students in the Washington D.C. area the ability to pursue an Executive MBA at its D.C. campus. Students can choose from either the standard Executive MBA or Global Executive MBA program, depending on their goals and interests. The curriculum of each program is essentially the same, with the major difference being the residency requirements. While Executive MBA students participate in only one of the week-long international residencies, students in the Global program participate in all four, which take place in Brazil, China, India, and somewhere in Europe. Both programs can be completed in a total of 21 months through monthly weekend residencies on campus.

Howard University

Another option for students is the online Executive MBA program offered by Howard University. This program can be completed by individuals who still maintain a full-time job in 18 months, though it's also possible to slow down the pace of the program according to the student's needs. Each student in this program is required to complete 42 hours of coursework, which are the same for all enrolled students. Topics that are covered by courses in this program include managerial accounting, ethical issues in business, organizational behavior and leadership, and entrepreneurship.

George Washington University

At George Washington University, students can enroll in the school's Professional MBA program. This program requires that students complete 55.5 credit hours in a timespan of two to five years. For maximum flexibility, students can opt to complete this program in any one of four available formats: cohort, online, self-paced, or a hybrid format that allows for both online and on-campus options. Regardless of the option selected, all courses are taught during the evenings, allowing professionals to continue working. In terms of curriculum, 28.5 of the required credits are completed through core courses, while the remaining 27 hours are completed through elective courses.

New York University

New York University has a Washington D.C. campus from which it offers an Executive MBA program. This 60-credit program is designed to be minimally intrusive on students' schedules, as it only requires one weekend per month of on-campus attendance and one week-long global residency that takes place during the first year of the two-year program. Students will also complete the core curriculum courses during the first year and then can select elective courses according to their interests during the second year. These electives provide further study in specific areas of business and cover topics like leadership and strategy.

General Admission Standards for Executive MBA Programs in Washington D.C.

Executive MBA programs are typically designed for individuals who have already gained some amount of work experience. Because of this, a common prerequisite to gaining admission into these programs is work experience. While some programs may not officially require work experience, rather highlighting the fact that most of their students do have several years of experience, other programs may set a minimum number of required years of working in order to be considered for admission. Another difference between the admission requirements of Executive and traditional MBA programs is the GRE/GMAT requirement. Some Executive programs will still recommend or require that students submit results from these tests; it is also common that this requirement is waived in consideration of applicants' work experience and if they have a previous academic history in business.

In review, students seeking Executive MBA programs in Washington D.C. have a variety of options to choose from. These programs differ in terms of how many credits students must complete, program format and residency requirements, and what types of courses are offered.
