California Colleges with Exercise Physiology Graduate Programs
San Diego State University
San Diego State University has a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology program as well as a dual degree program in exercise physiology and nutritional science. The curriculum provides students with both practical and theoretical knowledge and prepares interested students for doctoral degree programs in addition to practice. Students have the choice of completing either a master's thesis or directed readings as part of the 36-credit program. Required coursework includes experimental methods and physiological chemistry of exercise. Students should have a bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a 3.0 GPA from the last 60 credits of their degree. Those with a degree in an unrelated discipline can apply for conditional acceptance into the program. These students will need to take prerequisite courses in such areas as human anatomy and applied kinesiology prior to starting their master's degree program. All students will need to meet the below criteria for acceptance:
- 475 GRE score on the old version or the following scores for the new version: 151 verbal and 142 quantitative. Students will need to provide scores for the verbal, analytical writing, and quantitative sections of the GRE.
- Students will need to submit an online application, official transcripts, and the departmental prerequisite grade sheet.
California State University - Long Beach
Students can earn a Master of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in exercise physiology and nutrition at California State University in Long Beach. They can choose to write a master's thesis or complete the capstone course option or the comprehensive examination option. All of the tracks require at least 36 credits for graduation. Students take required classes such as exercise testing and biochemical and hormonal adaptations to physical activity. Potential students should have a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, physical education, or a related field with a 2.5 overall GPA and a 2.75 related coursework GPA. It should be noted that students with an unrelated bachelor's degree can apply but will need to complete prerequisite classes.
