Exercise physiology falls underneath the broader field of kinesiology and involves studying how people respond to physical activity. Students can see what the course offerings and admissions requirements are for a handful of California schools offering degrees in this field.
All of the California schools with exercise physiology programs offer graduate tuition rates under $20,000.

California Colleges with Exercise Physiology Graduate Programs
San Diego State University
San Diego State University has a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology program as well as a dual degree program in exercise physiology and nutritional science. The curriculum provides students with both practical and theoretical knowledge and prepares interested students for doctoral degree programs in addition to practice. Students have the choice of completing either a master's thesis or directed readings as part of the 36-credit program. Required coursework includes experimental methods and physiological chemistry of exercise. Students should have a bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a 3.0 GPA from the last 60 credits of their degree. Those with a degree in an unrelated discipline can apply for conditional acceptance into the program. These students will need to take prerequisite courses in such areas as human anatomy and applied kinesiology prior to starting their master's degree program. All students will need to meet the below criteria for acceptance:
- 475 GRE score on the old version or the following scores for the new version: 151 verbal and 142 quantitative. Students will need to provide scores for the verbal, analytical writing, and quantitative sections of the GRE.
- Students will need to submit an online application, official transcripts, and the departmental prerequisite grade sheet.
California State University - Long Beach
Students can earn a Master of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in exercise physiology and nutrition at California State University in Long Beach. They can choose to write a master's thesis or complete the capstone course option or the comprehensive examination option. All of the tracks require at least 36 credits for graduation. Students take required classes such as exercise testing and biochemical and hormonal adaptations to physical activity. Potential students should have a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, physical education, or a related field with a 2.5 overall GPA and a 2.75 related coursework GPA. It should be noted that students with an unrelated bachelor's degree can apply but will need to complete prerequisite classes. Potential students should have the following scores on the GRE: 150 verbal, 3.5 analytical writing, and 141 quantitative.
California State University - Northridge
California State University at Northridge offers a Master of Science in Kinesiology program. Students have the choice of adding focused elective courses in exercise physiology. To be admitted, they will need a 2.75 GPA from the last 60 credit hours of their bachelor's degree program. Students will need to submit an online application along with supporting documents, including three recommendation letters, a statement of intent, GRE scores, and transcripts.
San Jose State University
San Jose State University also offers a Master of Science in Kinesiology program with a concentration in exercise physiology. Students will need 30 credits to graduate, with required courses in quantitative research and advanced exercise physiology. Interested candidates should possess a bachelor's degree with a major or minor in kinesiology. Otherwise, they will need to fulfill 12 prerequisite credits. Candidates should have at least a 3.0 GPA for the last 60 credits of their bachelor's degree along with a 141 quantitative GRE score and a 150 verbal score. They will need to complete an online application, which includes a statement of purpose and two recommendation letters.
