Schools in Colorado Offering Graduate Programs in Exercise Science

Colorado State University

CSU allows you to earn a Master of Science in Health and Exercise Science. You'll focus heavily on the scientific aspect of this subject while performing research in the same area. Support is provided through teaching assistantships as well as service assistantships and research assistantships. If you plan to take your education further, the M.S. degree will prepare you for direct admissions to CSU's Ph.D. in Human Bioenergetics. Some of the courses you can find inside the master's program include exercise bioenergetics, advanced exercise physiology, and an elective in statistics.

University of Northern Colorado

UNC offers a Master of Science in Sport and Exercise Science with a concentration in Exercise Physiology. You'll earn both clinical and research experience as you work your way toward a graduate degree. You'll find the clinical sessions inside UNC's Cancer Rehabilitation Institute, which is known for being at the forefront of technology and research in the field. The department prides itself on the availability of one-on-one advisement and mentoring sessions during your studies. This program contains a total of 33 credits. You can complete the degree with a thesis, or by taking a certification exam in health fitness, cancer exercise, clinical exercise physiology, or strength and conditioning.

Western Colorado University

WCU's two-year Master of Science program earns you a degree in High Altitude Exercise Physiology. This specialized focus studies the concepts of exercise science during the rigorous conditions associated with higher elevations. Extreme environments are highlighted throughout the program, including conditions focused on higher amounts of heat and cold. A thesis is required for the degree, and you will earn a total of 36 credits by the time you graduate. Courses you can study throughout the program might include advanced statistics, environmental physiology, and quantitative research methods.

Colorado University

CU's Department of Integrative Physiology offers a few paths to a graduate degree in the exercise science field. You can start with a concurrent degree, which issues a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in Integrative Physiology in five years. If you don't need the undergraduate degree, the Master of Science takes 30 credits total to complete. To complete these credits, you can choose one of three options: you can stick to coursework only, you can add on a research project for an extra three credit hours, or you can author a thesis with an additional four to six credit hours.

The doctoral program, which grants a Ph.D. in the same subject, takes a total of 30 credit hours to finish. You'll need to take an advanced course in statistics and research, as well a professional skills course geared towards research scientists during your time as a Ph.D. student.
