Florida Schools Offering Graduate Programs in Exercise Science
University of Central Florida
Attending UCF, you can earn a Master of Science in Sport and Exercise Science. You'll also be able to pick from focus areas in sport nutrition, exercise biochemistry, and environmental physiology. Whether you choose to write a thesis is up to you, as the program offers tracks with and without a thesis. If you don't choose the thesis track, you'll need to complete an independent learning experience that involves a large amount of literature review. You could also opt for a practicum experience that counts as your capstone project. Some of the electives you can choose include cardiovascular physiology, statistics for educational data, and exercise endocrinology.
University of South Florida
USF is home to a Master of Science in Exercise Science. A total of three concentrations are available: strength and conditioning, health and wellness, and a general focus in exercise science. This is another university that offers thesis and non-thesis tracks. In lieu of a thesis, you will complete a comprehensive research project during your final semester before graduation. A total of 12 hours contribute to content specialization, and 33 total hours are earned with the degree. Elective specialization courses include fitness assessment and prescription, theories and models of health and physical activity, and neuromuscular aspects of exercise physiology.
Florida Atlantic University
FAU's Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion contains an interdisciplinary graduate degree. This Master of Science degree contains a track in exercise physiology, as well as other tracks in health promotion and strength and conditioning. The health promotion focus if a fully online program, while the others require classes to be attended in person. If your undergraduate degree is not in the same field, you'll need to go through some prerequisite courses before you begin the graduate level. Attending FAU will see you taking courses that include advanced sports nutrition, obesity, and stress management.
University of Tampa
With UT, you can find a Master of Science in Exercise and Nutrition Science. You can enter this program at any time during the year, and all courses are scheduled to allow you plenty of time to complete as a full-time student. Along with a master's degree, you are equipped with the knowledge you need to pass certification exams for Certified Sports Nutritionist and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credentials. UT boasts incredibly high-tech facilities thanks to a huge boost in funding over the past few years. Once you decide to enter the program, you can find courses that include current perspectives in exercise science, exercise and nutrition science theory, and sports supplements and ergonomic aids.
Florida International University
FIU contains a Master of Science in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. Although this is an accredited master's degree, it does not provide any teaching certification for graduating students. Program advisors have the final say on approval of degree requirements. Once all prerequisites are approved, graduate coursework can begin. Graduate courses at FIU include sports psychology, exercise testing and prescription of special populations, and sociology of sport.
Florida Exercise Science Graduate Program Admissions Requirements
Schools in Florida with graduate programs in exercise science will require you to submit letters of recommendation. You'll need to find two to three previous educators who are familiar with your best work related to the field. Certain schools ask you to submit your GRE scores, and if your GPA isn't above a 3.0, higher scores on the GRE may be necessary.
