Michigan Department of Education-approved accelerated programs are classified as a traditional path to certification. They are intended for individuals who have the ability and skills to satisfy the requirements of a faster paced course. This article discusses the requirements for earning teaching certification in Michigan using an accelerated program.

Step 1: Education and Preparation

Like any other traditional certification program in Michigan, the accelerated route towards certification requires the candidate to possess the minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited university.

The candidate is then required to take and successfully pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in the subject area they seek certification in. The exam requirement must be fulfilled before starting an accelerated program. Registration and payment for the exam may be done on the MTTC website.

The candidate must then apply and be accepted into an MDE-approved accelerated preparation program. Because each program provider is different, the candidate should research the application process and requirements for the program they are applying to. Approved programs include all the reading courses mandated by the state and consist of coursework in pedagogy methods for classroom implementation.

Accelerated programs are available utilizing distance learning platforms and face-to-face teaching. The program allows candidates to complete all required coursework while working full time. It is the responsibility of the candidate to obtain employment in order satisfy the program requirement of in-classroom teaching. Many program providers will assist the candidate in securing a position that will provide guidance similar to that of a student teaching experience.

Step 2: Complete Additional Requirements and Apply

All certification candidates in Michigan are required to complete training in CPR and first aid by an MDE-approved provider. A list of approved providers may be found on the MDE website.

Once all requirements have been fulfilled, the candidate must then set up an account on the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS). This account will be used to submit the application for a Standard Teaching Certificate. There is an application fee of $160 that must also be paid utilizing the MOECS account. Once the application and fees have been submitted, the Standard Teaching Certificate will be issued.

The certificate is valid for five years and must be renewed once it expires. The renewal process may begin as early as January 1st of the expiring year and the renewal application will be submitted using the MOECS account the candidate originally used for the initial certification. The certified teacher must complete 150 education-related professional development hours or earn a master's degree or higher in order to qualify for renewal.
