Educational Requirements for Louisiana First Grade Teachers

The first requirement for becoming a first grade teacher in Louisiana is to complete a state-approved teacher preparation program as part of undergraduate studies. While earning your bachelor's degree, this preparation program will concurrently prepare you to teach through teacher education coursework and a state-mandated 180 hours of fieldwork.

Both early childhood education and elementary education degrees can qualify you to help younger students develop educational, social, and personal skills through coursework in areas such as child development, teaching methods, and the humanities while also preparing you to meet the subsequent requirements for teaching.

Testing Requirements

The next requirement involves a series of exams. First, you will have to take a Praxis I test. This test is designed to demonstrate a candidate's basic competency, but an ACT score of 22 points or higher or an SAT score of at least 1100 can be documented in lieu of the Praxis I test to demonstrate basic competency. The Praxis I CORE Academic Skills for Educators Exam consists of a reading subtest, a writing subtest, and a mathematics subtest.

The Praxis Principles of Learning & Teaching (PLT) exam is the next requirement. Those wishing to teach at the first grade level will need to take the Principles of Learning & Teaching: K-6 exam. The exam will assess your knowledge of core teaching standards at the K-6 level.

The last testing requirement is the content area exam. Those wishing to teach at the first grade level will need to take the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects exam. This exam consists of a reading/language arts section, a mathematics section, a social studies section, and a science section. These subtests are designed to measure a candidate's knowledge of these subject areas and their ability to effectively teach them.

Certification and Renewal Requirements

Once all of these requirements are complete, candidates can move on to the application process through the Teach Louisiana online portal. Teacher preparation program graduates who have fulfilled testing requirements are awarded a Level 1 practitioner certificate. This certificate is good for three years, after which point a teacher can advance to a Level 2 certificate if they have successful performance evaluations.
