Information for Online Food Manager Certification in Minnesota

The Minnesota Food Code states that food establishments must hire at least one full-time certified food protection manager (CFPM). Although low-risk establishments are not required to have one, a CFPM is a practical addition to any restaurant or institution serving food, as they oversee the safe preparation of food products. According to the Food Code, the candidate for the CFPM position must earn certification within 60 days of employment. Applicants can avail of online training to prepare for any of the approved certification exams from Prometric, National Registry of Food Safety Professionals, ServSafe, and 360 Training.

There is no degree requirement for individuals who will take the training and the certification exam. However, it should be noted that those who apply for food manager positions, such as head chefs and supervisors, often get recruited because of their work experience in the food service industry. Food managers earn their certification, which is valid for three years, after completing the training course, passing the exam, and complying with other Minnesota state requirements.

Online courses provide the same extensive training that applicants can receive through classroom or one-on-one training. The food manager certification exam covers key concepts such as food safety management, foodborne illnesses and the prevention thereof, contamination and sanitation, and proper food handling. Both the training and exam are taken online.

Information and Requirements

The food manager certification exam is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and most training courses are based on U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Code. These online courses are self-paced but can be completed between five to ten hours. Applicants must achieve a certain score to pass the online proctored certification exam.

The study materials that come with the training courses are accessible on PC and mobile platforms, usually for an allotted time. Device specifications can be checked on the training providers' websites. Many exam providers offer their own training courses, which can be purchased together with the exam voucher. These packages cost around $99 to $150.

Additional Requirements

After passing the certification exam, applicants must submit to the Minnesota Department of Health an application and a $35 check or money order to receive their Minnesota Food Manager Certificate. This certificate should be readily available during health inspections.

The food manager certification must be renewed after three years. The same process applies, but applicants may opt for a refresher course instead of the more comprehensive training course to prepare for the exam.
