Graduate programs in forensic psychology are not yet widely available, even in a state as large as New York. However, a few school options are available for New York students. You could earn anything from a graduate certificate to a doctorate if you choose the correct university.

Schools in New York Offering Graduate Programs in Forensic Psychology

St. John's University

For existing psychologists, St. John's offers a post-doctoral Graduate Certificate in Forensic Psychology. Two versions of the certificate exist: the foundational, which can be completed with 39 credits; and the advanced certificate in criminal law, which goes to 62 total credits. The foundational certificate is included in the advanced certificate and doubles as a requirement for completion. The program offers a flexible course schedule, and you'll be able to study topics such as opinions in report writing, response style assessment, and evidence processing.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice

Inside the network of the City University of New York, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice holds several options for studying forensic psychology. To begin, two Master of Arts degrees can be earned: one in Forensic Psychology, and the other in Forensic Mental Health Counseling. The M.A. in Forensic Psychology is aimed at those who plan to practice psychology within the justice systems of the United States, or anyone who plans to move into Ph.D. studies. Meanwhile, the M.A. Forensic Mental Health Counseling program gives you the tools you need to become a counselor in other facilities, such as juvenile detention centers, social services, and private practices.

John Jay College also lets you earn a forensic psychology dual degree, giving you the title of Master of Arts and Juris Doctor. Two locations are available, with the first one at New York Law School specializing in mental disability law. The other location, contained in CUNY Law School, allows you to specialize as a full-fledged attorney with a background in forensic psychology. If you already have a graduate degree in the field, John Jay also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Forensic Psychology. You can choose one of six different tracks, each totaling 18 credits.

Fordham University

Studying forensic psychology at Fordham University will earn you a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology focused on the subject. While completing this program, you will go through an externship, and perform research before or during your doctoral period on a topic directly linked to forensic psychology. Once you finish your time at Fordham, you can move on to a career as a college or university professor, or shift into a clinical environment. Part of your training could involve working inside a psychiatric hospital. During your traditional courses, you will explore topics in trauma, juvenile justice, and law in the criminal and civil justice systems.

Admissions Requirements for Forensic Psychology Graduate Programs in New York

Applying directly to a Ph.D. program requires you to have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited university. Although the GRE Subject Exam in Psychology is not required, you will benefit from scoring high on the exam and sending your scores, along with the required General Exam test scores. A writing sample is also typically requested with your application. Make sure that your CV/resume is updated to show your latest and greatest accomplishments, professionally and academically. Postdoctoral certificate programs may require you to provide proof of your existing credentials as a practicing psychologist. For any dual degree programs that include law school, you will need to submit your scores from the LSAT as well as the GRE. All of your undergraduate grades should combine to average a GPA of at least 3.0.

Forensic psychology is a very specific field, and you'll need to prepare for the competition before applying to any of these New York schools. You can add to your credentials as a psychologist from another field if you choose to earn a graduate certificate after you have started a career.
